Zach Mullins

Growing up, Zach tried to get involved in every sport that he could safely play. Baseball ended up being the one that stuck with him the most. When he decided against playing baseball in college, he was determined to find a new way to stay involved with athletics.

Which memories of growing up with hemophilia A stand out to you?

“When I played baseball, I remember not wanting to tell my coaches about my hemophilia because I was worried that they’d be hesitant to let me play. Of course, my mom and I consulted my doctor before I joined the baseball team to make sure it would be safe for me to play. I knew that it was important for my coaches to understand my condition so that they could help, if needed. Learning to advocate for myself early in life has helped me do it easily now.”

Do you have any tips for staying on top of your hemophilia treatment?

“I’m very routine-oriented, so I typically set reminders on my phone for when I need to infuse. I always keep my factor out on my desk, so that if I’m walking by, I’ll be reminded that it’s there and that it needs to get done.”

What have you learned about the importance of mindset?

“I think it’s very important to have the right mindset towards your hemophilia and how it’s going to affect your life early on. You have to accept that it’s not going to change. You’re always going to have it and you can’t control that – but you can control how it affects your life. You don’t have to look at all of the negatives. Instead, view it as a way to create better traits in yourself, like the discipline and drive to want to live the best way possible.”

" Listening to your body is so important – it usually has a way of telling you what it needs."

A new chapter as a personal trainer

As a child, the first sport that Zach got involved with was baseball. His love for baseball stuck with him, but he eventually decided against pursuing a baseball career in college. Even then, his love for athletics remained strong. Zach went on to pursue a major in Strength and Conditioning in his undergraduate years, and later completed a graduate program to receive his master’s degree in applied physiology. Putting everything he learned to the test, Zach took a leap of faith after graduating and founded his own business as a personal trainer. “I started to realize I wanted my career to focus on health and fitness as a whole, and help other people while doing it,” Zach reflects.

Prioritizing movement

Even though his career revolves around exercise, Zach still prioritizes staying active in his free time. Whether it’s biking, kayaking, or working out at home, Zach likes to keep his body moving every day. Through his work with athletes, Zach has learned how to improve his own fitness routine with hemophilia A. “I’ve found that when I stay active, I gain a better understanding of my joints and muscles. Listening to your body is so important – it usually has a way of telling you what it needs,” Zach says.

A fresh start with KOVALTRY

Routine prophylaxis treatment is a key part of Zach’s weekly schedule. Before starting treatment with KOVALTRY, Zach used another Bayer factor VIII treatment. After consulting his doctor, Zach started treatment with KOVALTRY in 2020. Looking back on his experience, Zach says, “My transition to KOVALTRY felt comfortable, knowing it came from the same type of cell line as my previous product and had similar dosing options.”

Zach is currently on an every-other-day dosing schedule with KOVALTRY, which works well for him. “I’m very comfortable with my current schedule, but I appreciate knowing that I can adjust my dosing schedule with my doctor if needed,” Zach says.

When he turned 26, Zach switched to his own health insurance plan. Remembering this transition period, Zach says, “It was very stressful, which I’m sure a lot of folks can relate to. The Bayer $0 Co-Pay helped reduce that financial stress a lot.”

KOVALTRY works for Zach, but your needs are unique. Speak with your doctor to find out if KOVALTRY could be right for you.

KOVALTRY is used to treat and control bleeding in adults and children with hemophilia A. KOVALTRY can reduce the number of bleeding episodes in adults and children with hemophilia A when used regularly (prophylaxis). Your healthcare provider may give you KOVALTRY when you have surgery.

KOVALTRY is not used to treat von Willebrand Disease.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

You should not use KOVALTRY if you are allergic to rodents (like mice and hamsters) or any ingredients in KOVALTRY.

Tell your healthcare provider if you have heart disease or are at risk for heart disease.

The common side effects of KOVALTRY are fever, headache, and rash, in addition to inhibitors in patients who were not previously treated or minimally treated with Factor VIII products.

Your body may make antibodies, called “inhibitors” against KOVALTRY, which may stop KOVALTRY from working properly. If your bleeding is not adequately controlled, it could be due to the development of Factor VIII inhibitors. Consult with your healthcare provider to make sure you are carefully monitored with blood tests for the development of inhibitors to Factor VIII.

Allergic reactions may occur with KOVALTRY. Call your healthcare provider right away and stop treatment if you get tightness of the chest or throat, dizziness, decrease in blood pressure, and nausea.

Tell your healthcare provider about any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.

Call your healthcare provider right away if bleeding is not controlled after using KOVALTRY.
